چکیده

A simple and e€ective numerical method is proposed for simulating the temporal di€usive mass transport process through a microstructure with arbitrary complexity described by a phase-®eld approach. The mass di€usion through a given microstructure is modeled by a di€usion equation with a variable di€usion coecient, which is solved by an ecient and accurate semi-implicit spectral method. It is shown that it is possible to extract the e€ective di€usion coecient for any given microstructure from the temporal concentration pro®les. The method is used to simulate the grain boundary di€usion in a single-phase polycrystalline grain structure and the heterogeneous di€usion in a twophase microstructure with di€erent di€usion coecient in each phase. Results are compared with existing analytical theories and computer simulations. Ó 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 66.30.-h; 02.60.Cb; 66.10.Cb

Transport and magnetic critical current in superconducting MgB2 wires

Direct comparison of the magnetic and transport critical current density (Jc) for the same pieces of copper-sheathed MgB2 wires shows a large discrepancy in magnitude and field dependence of the two. The value of magnetic Jc can differ from the value of transport Jc by a factor of 10 or more. This discrepancy does not occur merely because of the difference in the voltage at which the magnetic a...

Relationship between the Microstructure and Gas Transport Properties of Polyurethane/Polycaprolactone Blends

In this study, the relation between the permeation properties and structural characteristics of thermoplastic polyurethane based on polycaprolactone diol, TPU(PCL), and polycaprolactone (PCL) blends is investigated. for the purpsoes of this study, PU, PCL, and TPU/PCL blends containing 20 wt.% and 40 wt.% PCL were prepared via a solution blending method. The miscibility and good distribution of...

Experimental and Mathematical Investigation of Time-Dependence of Contaminant Dispersivity in Soil

Laboratory and field experiments have shown that dispersivity is one of the key parameters in contaminant transport in porous media and varies with elapsed time. This time-dependence can be shown using a time-variable dispersivity function. The advantage of this function as opposed to constant dispersivity is that it has at least two coefficients that increase the accuracy of the dispersivity p...

A new approach to microstructure optimization of solid oxide fuel cell electrodes

Designing optimal microstructures for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes is complicated due to the multitude of electro-chemo-physical phenomena taking place simultaneously that directly affect working conditions of a SOFC electrode and its performance. In this study, a new design paradigm is presented to obtain a balance between electrochemical sites in the form of triple phase boundary (...

Growth temperature dependence of transport properties of InAs epilayers grown on GaP

Undoped InAs was grown by molecular-beam epitaxy directly on GaP at a set of different substrate temperatures. Transport properties were characterized by means of Hall-effect and resistivity measurements at temperatures between 3 and 300 K. It was observed that samples grown at higher temperatures had lower carrier concentrations, consistent with a decrease of ionized defects. In addition, samp...
